‘Making Cycling Accessible to All…’
We believe that everybody should be given the opportunity to cycle and enjoy cycling, regardless of age or ability.
Here at Pedal Power we specialize in making cycling accessible for people with impairments. We do this by hiring out bikes and trikes designed for use by disabled adults and children. In fact, we possibly have the widest selection in the UK with equipment available for hire by specialist brands such as Tomcat, Draisin, Rifton and Van Raam. Whatever your age or ability we have something that will allow you to pedal, or at least enjoy the cycling experience with one of our multi-user cycles.
The friendly and professional staff and volunteers at Pedal Power can assist you in choosing what bike is right for your needs. As well as being cycling enthusiasts, our staff come from a variety of backgrounds such as physiotherapy, the cycle industry, cycle coaching and engineering, making us experts in offering professional advice when helping you select what equipment is right for you.
We must point out that a disabled person must be formally assessed in order for us to determine the most appropriate cycle for them to ride.In order to be assessed the person must already be a member. If the person is under-16 then our Children in Need funded assessor, Gabriela, should carry out this assessment. She is only available on Fridays. Otherwise Sybil is the person to speak to.
Also we are unable to hire adapted cycles to members of the public as there is such demand for them from our disabled members.
As of 2011-01-04 we required by HMRC to operate as a VAT-registered concern. This means that all our prices now contain a VAT element at 20%. However, where the person rides a cycle specifically sold for the use disabled people then the person may be exempted but only when the appropriate form has been signed by the appropriate person. Until then we will have to charge the fee including the VAT element.
In practice this means that people who ride two-wheelers and standard trikes such as the Mission and Tri-1 may not be exempted.
Pedal Power has an increasing selection of specialist bikes and trikes allowing people of all abilities and ages to cycle. Some of the trikes we stock are listed below. However, if you don’t see what you’re looking for, call us on (029) 2039 0713 – we have more on offer than we can display here and we are increasing our stock of bikes all the time.
The Mission Trikes were developed with the assistance of parents who have children and teenagers with various balance problems and disabilities. Therapists advise that the exercise of cycling in many instances enhances muscular development and the Mission Trikes are ideal.
This tandem is an amazing conception that combines a wheelchair and a bike into a tandem that provides real mobility and fun. (It allows a person who is unable to actively contribute to the cycling to still enjoy the activity). The beauty of this bike is that it separates in seconds allowing the wheelchair user to be independently mobile.
The Wrangler (large) and Ranger (medium) trikes are designed for children and adolescents with disabilities. They have a range of features that help enable people of varying levels of ability to ride.
The Tracker is designed for teenagers and adults.
Hand-cycling
is very popular for recreation and is also quickly growing into a
competitive sport for disabled athletes. Hand-bikes are a great way
to get your aerobic exercise. The benefits of hand-cycling to
overall health, physical conditioning and quality of life are
substantial. With a hand cycle you can attain the freedom of cycling
independently, or join your cycling friends and family members in
outdoor exercise. Hand-bikes are great for increasing strength,
stamina and endurance.
Accessories such as footplates and hand mitts allow feet and hands
to be secured to the bike, so enabling active participation.
An overhead hoist is available for transfer onto the bike.
The Side By Side is one of our most popular trikes. It is suitable for those who cannot pedal through their own strength or ability, as it has an assisted pedalling setting.
You can hire trikes from our Pontcanna Centre
