At Pedal Power we believe that everybody who is interested in cycling should be given the opportunity to enjoy cycling, regardless of age or ability.
We know that a good assessment of the cyclist is key to finding solutions that are safe, comfortable and successful. Our trikes have been chosen by our physiotherapist for specific needs, from a wide selection of manufacturers, who specialize in adapted cycling. These include Quest 88, Draisin, Da Vinci Hand bikes, Tomcat, Rifton, Van Raam, Skeppshult, Pashley, Theraplay, We also have a number of electrically assissted cycles. Whatever your age or ability we have something that will allow you to pedal or alternatively enjoy the cycling experience with one of our multi-user cycles.
Anybody who has difficulties cycling an ordinary bike requires a formal assessment before they can hire a cycle from Pedal Power. To organise this, please download a membership and assessment form, complete and return with either a cheque or pay on arrival by cash or card.. We will contact you upon receipt of your application. Cyclists 18 years old and younger are seen by our part-time Children’s Physiotherapist, who is currently funded by BBC Children in Need and is generally available Mondays and Wednesdays. Adults are assessed by our part time Cycle Training Officer. We may need to charge for an assessment.
The cyclists’ safety is of paramount importance. They must be supported by properly trained support workers. If the support worker is also riding, either on a two-wheeler or assisting with the adapted bike, they will be charged at the subsidised rate of £1.50 per hour (from September 1 2012).
Increasingly we are finding support workers being sent by their organisation to support cyclists when the support worker has never been here before. All Organisations have a duty of care to their cyclists and carers need to be aware of the needs of their cyclists, and the area in which they are cycling. Pedal Power offer a Cycle Support Workers Training for a cost of £20(+VAT) per person—this enables the support worker to understand the cycling needs of the person being assessed. This course should be considered compulsory for all support workers. If the support worker attends the assessment they will receive this training.
We are required by HMRC to operate as a VAT-registered concern. This means that all our prices now contain an added VAT element at 20%.
HMRC do permit the exemption of VAT in certain, quite restricted, circumstances. Generally, if you can get on and off a trike you have to pay the VAT. However, when the cyclist needs support on the trike with footplates, side or back supports then he or she is likely to be exempt from paying VAT. However, we must have a signed VAT exemption form before we can remove the VAT from the hire charge. The signatory must either be the cyclist or somebody with power of attorney for the cyclist. Bring the completed form back to our reception for it to be put into force.
