Pedal Power cycling centre is a charity that aims to make cycling accessible to all. It has a large range of specialised bikes, accessible routes, trained staff and volunteers to assist anyone to cycle. Social and fundraising events are ongoing throughout the year. These are advertised through our newsletter and website.
Pedal Power originated as part of a physiotherapy exercise programme for adults with learning disabilities. In 1996 a group of adults with learning disabilities went to the Forest of Dean to try out some accessible bikes. They had such an enjoyable time that it was decided that the physiotherapy service should introduce cycling as part of the service offered.
A few bikes were bought, and used around the grounds of Ely hospital. It was not long before Cardiff Council were being approached to allow the bikes to be stored and used in Pontcanna – a partnership between the Council and NHS was formed and the bikes were transferred to Pontcanna and serviced by the Council. Cycling became very popular and the cyclists kept asking for a place to meet after cycling. In 2000 a charity was set up to support Pedal Power. It gained charitable status in 2002. It soon became apparent that cycling could benefit a much wider community, and the charity’s mission statement was agreed of ‘Making Cycling Accessible to All’. In order to progress, regular fundraising and publicity events were organised.
Pedal Power started applying for grants and in 2005 Environmental Wales awarded a grant to Pedal Power for a volunteer co-ordinator, who, when appointed used an office in NHS premises in Ely. In September 2005 Pedal Power commenced offering 2 cycling sessions a week. Pedal Power took over the Council’s general cycle hire in March, 2006, and appointed its second member of staff – the cycle hire manager. Pedal Power has grown considerably in the past 5 years. A grant from the Big Lottery Fund saw a new purpose building being opened in October, 2007. Grants, donations and fundraising has enabled Pedal Power to grow to where it is today
Pedal Power now has over 600 Members and many more Supporters.
